Alex Laing

Alex Laing is the Director of Music and Expressive Arts at Wells Cathedral School, where his work with violinists, chamber musicians and orchestras has become a defining force in the school’s musical life. A graduate of the University of Cambridge and the Birmingham Conservatoire — where he earned the Diploma of Professional Studies in Music Performance — Alex launched into a vibrant portfolio career that quickly marked him out as a musician of exceptional versatility.

As an orchestral leader, chamber musician, presenter, writer, adjudicator and educator, he built a reputation for artistic flair and communicative power. Today, he is celebrated above all as a conductor and coach, renowned for the electric energy he brings to youth ensembles and the transformative experiences he creates for young musicians.

His work with the Benedetti Foundation has taken him across the full spectrum of musical learning — from the first steps of young beginners to the advanced artistry of conservatoire students and adult learners. He is equally committed to empowering music teachers, helping them develop confident ensemble leadership, rehearsal craft and conducting technique.

Alex’s pupils have gone on to achieve extraordinary success: national and international competition wins, BBC Young Musician category finals, and full scholarships to leading conservatoires. This remarkable breadth of influence has led many to describe him as one of the rare musicians who can ignite inspiration in performers of every age and stage of their musical journey.
